A former care home will be transformed into a shop and a nursery after plans were given the green light.

The Willows residential home in Mill Street, Bridgnorth, will undergo the transformation after Shropshire Council granted planning permission.

The plans were submitted by Simon Ridgeway, of the Old Mill Antiques Centre, which is based nearby.

The nursery business already operates adjacent to the home, but will expand, catering for 76 children, compared to the current 56.

Three new jobs will be created at the nursery, with staff numbers up to 16 from 13.

The Old Mill Antiques Centre’s partner business, Perry & Phillips Auctioneers, closed last year.

In a report to planning officials, Shropshire Council’s director of place, Mark Barrow, said: “This application proposes the change of use of a former care home to a shop unit and additional accommodation for the attached children’s day nursery.

“The scheme involves largely internal alterations, the external alterations which involve interventions to the front elevation of the building to include the installation of a new shop entrance door and window.

“The proposals involve converting the two front rooms to a retail unit with the removal of the chimney, a new front entrance door directly off the street is proposed to replace an existing window and the other existing window altered to create a display window.

“The development would create additional accommodation for the day nursery by knocking through at first floor level, access would also be afforded via the existing lobby area. Additional nursery staff accommodation would also be created on the second floor which would be accessed via the existing lobby.

“During the course of the application the applicant has confirmed that the scheme would increase the capacity of the day nursery from 56 children to approximately 76.

“There are currently 13 members of staff and this would increase to 16.”
