Details have been announced of the election to replace a Herefordshire county councillor who resigned at the start of the year.

Bromyard West seat is currently vacant following the resignation of Independents for Herefordshire member Alan Seldon, who had moved away from the area.

The election is expected to be contested, with at least two locals indicating on social media that they intend to stand.

This being the case, the election will be held on March 10.

Bromyard town councillor and former mayoress Clare Davies wrote on social media: “It is a great honour to have been asked to stand as an True Independent candidate.”

Among the priorities she listed were mental health, social and affordable housing, child welfare, support for the elderly, green spaces and support for business and employment.

Nick Ferguson, a former police officer who currently runs Cadmore Lakeside Hotel, near Tenbury Wells, meanwhile posted that he would stand as the Independents for Herefordshire candidate.

“I believe the post needs filling quickly as there is so much work to do to improve things for the good folk of Bromyard,” he said.

Highways and road maintenance are “high on my agenda”, while he would “hold (Herefordshire Council) to account to ensure that everything it does represents very best value for money”.

Coun Ellie Chowns, leader of the Green Group currently in joint control of Herefordshire Council with Independents for Herefordshire, said: “We will be supporting the candidate of our coalition partners.”

With the departure of Coun Seldon, Independents for Herefordshire now have 18 councillors, while the Greens have seven.

North Herefordshire Conservatives deputy chairman Ewen Sinclair said: “We are fielding a candidate – at this time, I can’t provide a name.”

North Herefordshire Constituency Labour Party also said it intends to field a candidate. The constituency's Liberal Democrats did not respond to enquiries.

Papers nominating candidates have to be handed in to Hereford Town Hall by the end of next week (February 11).

Voters in the ward who are not already registered have until February 22 to do so. This can now be done online.
