Appeal to re-open toilets at Bridgnorth supermarket

Bridgnorth Town Council has appealed to Sainsbury’s to sort out the problem of the supermarket’s toilets that has forced it to close.

While the cause has not been publically confirmed, the town council said there have been various problems at the Old Smithfield store, including sewage escaping close to the building.

Town clerk, Clare Turner said dozens of people have contacted the council complaining about the closure, which is over 600 meters from the nearest public toilet in Listley Street.

However, because there has been previous vandalism at those toilets, the town council met to discuss the issue and agreed to appeal to Sainsbury’s chief executive officer, Simon Roberts to try and get the issue sorted.

“We can’t tell Sainsbury’s what to do but, on behalf of residents, we can emphasise that this is a serious problem for many of our residents,” said Ms Turner.

“We are willing to engage with Sainsbury’s to see if there is any way the issue can be resolved.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “Due to ongoing challenges with misuse, we made the difficult decision to close the customer toilets at our Bridgnorth store earlier this year. Our colleagues can help to direct customers to nearby toilets and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
