Abergavenny plane crash: Three escape after aircraft smashes into dual carriageway

Three people in a light aircraft that crash-landed on to a dual carriageway in Abergavenny have escaped without serious injury.

Despite pictures showing smoke billowing from the plane, police said the aircraft's occupants were treated at the scene and that their injuries were not life-threatening.

In a statement, officers said: "We are currently at the scene of an incident involving a light aircraft close to the A40 between Raglan and Abergavenny.

"Officers were called at approximately 11am this morning, after the aircraft was reported to have made an unscheduled landing in the area, colliding with overhead wiring."

They added: "The A40 remains closed between the Hardwick roundabout and Raglan. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey."

One Twitter user, posted a photo of smoke rising up into the air from the dual carriageway, saying that a "plane has crashed on the A40 south of Abergavenny" and that there was "a private landing strip nearby".

Other pictures on social media showed cars stationary on the road and drivers standing outside their vehicles, looking on at the thick plumes of black smoke.
