Essential maintenance work is to be carried out on the A49 near Hereford which will mean smoother and safer roads for drivers.

National Highways is taking action to tackle a deteriorating road surface between the Grafton roundabout (A49/B4399) and the Belmont Asda roundabout (A49/A465).

Resurfacing work will be carried out which will include laying a material to increase the road surface friction, therefore reducing skidding. Road markings and road studs will also be replaced making the carriageway clearer and safer.

To enable the work to be carried out, there will be phased closures along the A49 which begin next week. These will take place at night, Monday to Thursday, when traffic numbers are lower.

The closures will be:

Monday 20 June to Thursday 23 June, between 11pm and 4am: A49 closed from Grafton roundabout to Belmont Asda roundabout including the Ross Road junction with Holme Lacey Road and Walnut Tree Avenue.

Hinton Road will be open during the closures which will enable local traffic to navigate around the closure.

Monday 27 June to Thursday 30 June, between 8pm and 6am: A49 closed between Grafton roundabout and Belmont Asda roundabout. During these closures Ross Road junction will be open with access from Holme Lacey Road and Walnut Tree Avenue.

Fully signed diversion routes, agreed with the local authority, will be in place.
