20mph for village school A road

An “advisory” speed limit of 20mph is being brought in on an A-road through a Herefordshire village.

Herefordshire Council says it was approached by Eardisley Parish Council over the “the excess speed of vehicles” on the A4111 through the village, south of Kington, in particular in front of the village primary school between Millstream Gardens and Lady Gardens.

The council then consulted with councillors, the school, the police, fire, ambulance services and haulage groups.

“Herefordshire Council believes that the adoption of this advisory scheme will provide the necessary safeguards to make this section of road safer,” it said.

Advisory speed limits are not enforceable and do not require a traffic regulation order (TRO) to implement.

A report for the parish council a year ago said speeding through the village and the nearby Winforton “is an ongoing issue”, with a 2022 speed survey showing that 60 per cent of the traffic entering Eardisley from the north was over the speed limit.

“The gates at the entrance to the villages have helped to signal a change from the deregulated section to the 30 mph limit, but more needs to be done,” it said.
