JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job title:          BSL Intervenor 
                 
Hours:             37 hours per week, term time only arrangement: 0.8418 contract

Contract:         Up to two years fixed term

Salary:             Full time salary £20,945 - £22,006; Pro rata £17,632 – £18,525 0.8418 contract

Closing date:   Sunday 4 September 2022 at 5 pm

Job purpose: 

To provide support to a young person with Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI) comprising a combination of vision and hearing impairments, and ensure optimum access to the environment and whole College curriculum.

To support the young person’s learning and overall development and encouraging the achievement of their full potential.

Main duties and responsibilities:
 
Communication
•    Develop a positive working relationship with the young person which allows a clear understanding of communication strategies and become proficient in the young person’s communication methods and strategies
•    British Sign Language Level 3 qualification (or working towards) to facilitate communication and model language
•    Must be an independent communicator

Implementing the curriculum
•    Primary responsibility to provide direct one-to-one support to the young person with MSI throughout all or part of the College day. Support will be provided during group work, whole class activities and on an individual basis.
•    Ensuring appropriate presentation of information and activities with regards to the young person’s sensory impairments and individual learning style
•    Differentiation and preparation of resources with regards to the young person’s sensory impairments and individual learning style
•    Supporting and reinforcing development of concepts, employing pre-learning and post-learning strategies
•    Employing strategies to check the young person’s understanding
•    Assist the young person in anticipating events
•    Support the achievements of the young person’s goals, objectives and targets
•    Support with the effective use of assistive devices, IT and other specialist equipment with appropriate training and supervision

Social and emotional wellbeing
•    Supporting the young person in taking advantage of incidental learning opportunities within classroom and developing their compensatory strategies
•    Providing feedback to help the young person understand the effects of their actions
•    Encouraging and facilitating independence and providing opportunities to make choices and decisions (maintaining a sense of control, self-determination)
•    Facilitating the development of functional skills in lessons and within broader curriculum 
•    Promoting social and emotional well-being
•    Supporting positive interactions with others and developing acceptable strategies

Medical, health and personal care
•    Implementing strategies devised by MSI/hearing impairment specialists 
•    In the first instance, when friendships are being developed, provide support at lunchtimes and with peers

Planning and monitoring progress
•    Develop awareness of the young person’s learning style and pace to enable motivation of the young person as an active learner
•    Participate in the assessment of the young person, this may include progress reports, data collection and other documentation to monitor progress
•    Input towards planning and setting of young person’s goals, objectives and targets and actively participate at their annual review

Collaborative working
•    Working under the direction and supervision of the line manager and specialist teachers involved with the young person
•    Work co-operatively with a variety of other involved stakeholders

Professional development
•    To undergo initial induction and then be involved in ongoing CPD
•    To undertake any recommended in-service training wherever possible
