A man has died following a collision between a train and a van in West Lancashire, police said.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called at 3.18pm on Saturday to reports that a train had struck a van at a level crossing in Burscough, about 15 miles northeast of Liverpool.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, the force said, while two train passengers received treatment for minor injuries. One person was in the van.

Paramedics and the fire service also attended the incident.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened," BTP said in a statement.

The force asked for any witnesses who haven't already spoken to police to come forward.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, BTP said.

National Rail said all lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport had been closed while emergency services dealt with an incident and that disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day.

Train services between Southport and Manchester have also been suspended, according to a post from Manchester Piccadilly Station on X.
