PCC urges people to stay at home

Gwent’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has called upon people to stay at home “to help stop the spread of Covid-19”.

Gwent’s PPC, Jeff Cuthbert, issued a statement via social media to update residents on what the police had been doing since lockdown began.

So far, there have been 80 fines issued across the Gwent region to those flouting lockdown rules.

Currently, people can only leave their homes for an essential journey which includes one form of exercise a day, travelling to and from work if you can’t work from home, and shopping for essential items like food and prescriptions.

Those that breach the rules could be fined an initial £60, but this is halved if paid within a fortnight.

However, repeat offences could lead to a £120 fine.

Mr Cuthbert said: “Since lockdown began, Gwent Police have been out in our communities engaging with residents, explaining the importance of staying at home and encouraging people to help stop the spread of Covid1-19.

“Sadly, there are still a minority of people who continue to ignore the instructions.

“These people are putting us all at greater risk.

“Gwent Police under these circumstances have no other option than to enforce warnings and issue fines to those who continue to ignore the instructions.

“Can I say that I am pleased the overwhelming majority of people are following the instructions and helping to keep people safe.”
