NHS trust alert to cyber threats, says health chief

An NHS trust remains “vigilant” as the risk of cyber-attacks increases.

Cyber security teams have been investigating following suspected cyber attacks at five NHS trusts in December.

Alder Hey Children’s Foundation Trust, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital, Wirral University Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust and Medway Community Health were all targeted.

Robert Mackie, interim chief executive of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, said cyber security is a top priority for the trust.

In his report to the trust’s January board meeting, Mr Mackie said: “An investigation is currently underway into the cyber attacks, and it was confirmed that the attacker in the north west gained access unlawfully to systems containing patient data.

“Our digital teams, led by Lisa Yates, director of digital and chief information officer, continue to be vigilant due to the rise of cyber attacks.

“We consistently achieve DSPT Standards exceeded and Cyber Essentials certifications to assist in keeping us safe. However, we all need to be more vigilant as the risk increases.”
