Ludlow MP welcomes rise in general practice workforce

Philip Dunne MP has welcomed latest figures showing there are 53 more doctors, nurses and other patient care staff working in general practice in South Shropshire.  

Latest figures show a 45% increase in healthcare professionals working in general practice in South Shropshire since 2019. This includes roles such as dispensers, health care assistants, phlebotomists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, therapists and others. 

Mr Dunne said: "General Practice is critical to good health in our community, and is so often our first port of call in addressing health needs.  

So I am very pleased latest data shows a significant increase in healthcare professionals working in general practice in South Shropshire since 2019. This is good news for local patients and I hope we will continue to see improved recruitment and retention." 

Data published on GOV.UK gives the change in staff numbers between March 2019 and March 2023.  

Improving general practice supports the early identification of serious illnesses and the management of chronic conditions, while also helping people to live healthier lives. In the Primary Care Recovery Plan and Long Term Workforce Plan the Government has committed to increasing the number of people working in general practice.
