Historic Herefordshire pub to get makeover

A historic inn in a North Herefordshire  town is to get a makeover.

Owners of the grade II* listed Talbot Hotel in New Street, Ledbury, which dates from the late 16th century, said in their application for listed building consent that they wanted to create more bar space by moving the servery to the back wall and re-flooring the area of the current bar.

The plan by Wiltshire-based pub company Wadworth also proposed replacing a modern screen with traditional oak posts, and creating a new sash window to serve customers in the courtyard in summer.

Walls and ceilings are to be “sensitively redecorated throughout”, panelling in the dining room repaired, and the toilets refurbished.

“All the materials to be used will be in keeping with the existing materials in style, form and make up,” a statement with the company’s application said.

Neither Herefordshire Council’s buildings conservation officer nor Ledbury town council objected to the scheme.

Granting listed building consent, planning officer Emily Brookes concluded the proposals would bring “enhancements in terms of reverting some of the later works back to those original to the building”.
