Herefordshire is showing its support for Merchant Navy Day by flying the official Red Ensign flag in the county to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the Merchant Navy.
Merchant Navy Day honours the brave men and women of the merchant navy who kept our island nation ‘afloat’ during First and Second World Wars, as well as later conflicts involving the UK.
Chairman of the Council, Cllr. Brian Wilcox said: “Whilst Herefordshire is not directly connected with any seaports, everyone in Britain owes their thanks to those who served in the merchant navy during the two world wars. We must remember the sacrifices they made and recognise that without merchant ships, the UK would have been starved of food and essential supplies.
The Red Ensign, or 'Red Duster' as it is affectionately known, has been the recognised flag of the British Merchant Navy since 1854.
In Hereford City the flag will be flown on both the Shire Hall and the Town Hall from Merchant Navy Day on Monday 3rd until Friday 7th September.
