The reopening of a historic Herefordshire village pub has taken a step closer with the submission of plans for new hand-painted exterior signs.

Dating from the 17th century, the grade II listed Roebuck Inn in Brimfield, between Leominster and Ludlow, has been closed since 2023, since when it has been bought by Dudley-based Black Country Traditional Inns for a reported £265,000.

The firm is now seeking planning permission (application 261502) to add large hand-painted lettering “in midnight blue” to the building, which would be illuminated, and to attach a new external sign, with a midnight blue background and cream text and also lit, to the existing bracket and frame projecting from the building.

In late April, Black Country’s earlier applications were granted for planning permission and listed building consent to knock down a modern extension which previously linked the pub to the adjacent three-bedroom hotel and village shop, which will now become a private home.
This will require the previous beer garden in front of the extension to be removed, while a new entrance and smoking shelter is being be created on the other side of the pub building.

With “minor” internal and external alterations also due to be made to the pub building itself, it is due to reopen “as a traditional real ale public house”, though with no kitchen.
Black Country Traditional Inns was asked when it is likely to open the pub.
Comments on its signage proposal can be made until July 9.
