Former councillor to stand again

A former councillor says a criminal record has not put her off from standing for election again.

Glenda Powell, 74, of Charlton Avenue, who will be contesting the Newton Farm ward with four other candidates, pleaded guilty last year to causing criminal damage and sending an offensive letter.

However, Ms Powell who used to represent the Belmont ward on Herefordshire Council for the Independents until 2015 says she is contesting the recent judgement.

And she also hopes to win the Newton Farm ward as a Democrats & Veterans Party candidate.

Last time around she received 305 votes and came second to Independent Phil Edwards who is now stepping down.

“I’ve lived in Newton Farm for 44 years and in the past, I’ve given my residents 100% of the time,” she said.

“I want to get the roads fixed and the graffiti taken down.”

She said when she was previously a councillor, she would walk with highways contractors around the ward and highlight problems that needed fixing.

“It was great because people saw us and could see working being done,” Ms Powell said.

She said she was not put off from standing despite recently having a criminal record and believes she has a strong chance of winning.

“I don’t think Labour or the Conservatives will get any joy because of what is happening at Westminster,” she said.

“And only two of the candidates including myself actually live in Newton Farm.”
