Calls for safer pedestrian access over road bridge

Campaigners are calling on Herefordshire Council to introduce a safe walkway for pedestrians over the road bridge in Lugwardine.

The bridge over the Lugg is extremely narrow for pedestrians and there is no pavement along the bridge.

Alan Long is one of the people behind the campaign, and he hopes the move towards more environmentally friendly means of transport may help their cause.

“We are working on a campaign for a bridge over the Lugg on the A438,” he said.

“As a pedestrian, you have to walk along the road, and it’s a very narrow bridge.

“There have been accidents on the bridge and various things like that.

“The aim is to get walking and cycling somehow on that area rather than what we have at the moment.

“Historically, there has been a lot of interest by Bartestree and Lugwardine parish council to try to get this put in.

“But the way things are going with trying to get people walking and cycling, hopefully we can get some traction on it.

“We want people to write to councillor John Harrington and MP Bill Wiggin about the issue.

“Our ward councillor Paul Andrews has been very supportive throughout this.”

Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport John Harrington said the county council was aware of the issue and is looking for a solution.

“This matter has been raised by residents, the parish council and the ward councillor,” he said.

“I have recently walked this stretch over the bridge with councillor Andrews and recognise that it is by no means ideal, and we will work with the parish council and ward councillor to find a solution.”
