A man has died and a woman has been taken to hospital following a serious collision on the A49 near The Axe & Cleaver near Much Birch.
The incident involving a car and tractor happened after just after 10pm last night.
The tractor was towing a trailer loaded with 15 tonnes of hay which caught fire following the collision.
The A49 remains closed in both directions between the A466 (Kingsthorne) and the A40 (Wilton).
Police advise that the road is likely to remain closed until evening rush hour today.
Highways England say an investigation will get underway when deemed safe to do so and the road surface will need repairing.
Diversion:
Southbound. Exit the A49 at Kingsthorne and take the A466 southbound. At Monmouth take the A40 northbound to re-join the A49 at Wilton
Northbound. Exit at Wilton and take the A40 southbound. At Monmouth take the A466 northbound to re-join the A49 at Kingsthorne
