Some gigs and events planned for Gloucester Guildhall have had to be moved elsewhere or postponed.

The arts, entertainment and cultural hub in Eastgate Street is housed in a 19th-century building and features a 400-capacity main hall, an independent 75-seat cinema, and a relaxed café-bar.

But Gloucester City Council say some of the venue’s programme has been rescheduled after finding an issue in the ballroom while conducting yearly maintenance checks.

American rock band Electric Six, who were meant to play in the city tonight (June 16), are among those affected.

Their show will now take place at the Subscription Rooms in Stroud on the same day. All tickets remain valid for The Sub Rooms gig.

A spokesperson for Gloucester City Council said: “Gloucester City Council conducts annual maintenance checks across its buildings and venues.

“One of these checks identified that works are required in the Ballroom of Gloucester Guildhall, which has necessitated some of the venue’s programme to be rescheduled until works are completed.”

The Guildhall was originally built in 1890 and opened in 1892 and was formally occupied by Sir Thomas Rich’s School.

It was the base for the town clerk, accountant, surveyor, and other officials and also housed council chambers, committee rooms, the mayor’s parlour and a public hall for many years. The building was the venue of the annual Mayor’s Ball.

And was refurbished and converted into an arts centre between 1985 and 1988 and changes were made to make it more suitable for pursuing its career in the arts industry.

The council chamber took an extra six months before becoming the Chamber Cinema. Its stage was made out of the wood which once stood as some of the doors within the building.

It is now home to a programme of more than 300 events and workshops and classes.

The city council says Gloucester Guildhall is the cultural hub of the city and remains at the forefront of the arts offering to residents of the area.
