West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin’s campaign to secure a safe road crossing near to a county primary school took a step forward as she discussed the issue with the local county councillor.

Harriett visited Lower Broadheath Primary School to hear how pupils face extra challenges crossing the busy main road outside their school.

Over 18 months ago, the MP called for extra enforcement to combat the problems caused by speeding lorries driving through the village.

Together with Worcestershire County Councillor Scott Richardson Brown the pair agreed to press for a permanent crossing to help pupils and parents to get safely across the road.

Harriett commented: “The main road through Lower Broadheath has been a significant concern over recent years and there has been increased enforcement to try and reduce speeding.

“Nevertheless, it is clearly a busy road at all times of the day and with extra new housing being built, more and more people are crossing the road, either to get to and from school or to get to the village pubs and community shop.

“Speaking to pupils and staff, it is clear to me that this has wholescale support and from my time knocking on doors in the village, I know that this is a key issue for villagers.

“I plan to work with Scott and the Worcestershire highways team to see where we can secure the funds to get this crossing built.”

Scott added: “This road in Lower Broadheath is clearly getting busier every year and with more housing planned near Crown East it will continue to see increasing levels of traffic in the future.

“It's important we encourage move active travel across Worcestershire but to do that we need to have the infrastructure to enable people to safely walk around the village and in particularly encourage parents and children to walk to school.

“A new crossing is therefore a very important component of this and I'll work hard with Worcestershire County Council to look at how it can be funded and installed."
