Westfields recorded a fine 3-1 home win on Saturday over visiting Royal Wootton Bassett when they came back from an early visitors’ goal to win in style at allpay.park.

Former Westfields and Hereford FC player John Mills put the visitors ahead with only 5 minutes on the clock when he seized on a right-wing cross and neatly side-stepped the Westfields defence and slotted home past Ian Havard to give Royal Wootton Bassett a dream start.

However, Westfields came back into the game and Josh Hunt and new signing Keanu Cooper both went close before Hunt eventually put the sides level just before the break when he was on hand to seize an opportunity for his 19th goal of the season from close range.

After the break Westfields stepped up their attack and went ahead in the 75th minute with a blistering goal from Jamie Bird who went on an excellent run, beating 2 defenders before unleashing a fine right-foot shot into the top corner of the net to give Westfields the lead.

This was just the impetus that Westfields wanted but Royal Wootton Bassett stayed in the game and only good defending by Westfields defender Kane Kahaki kept Westfields in the game.

Westfields put the issue beyond doubt in the 90th minute when Luke Sylvester got down the right flank and put over a pin-point cross where substitute Cawley Cox was on hand to side-foot the ball into the net to give Westfields a 3-1 lead.

Wootton Bassett still wouldn’t lie down and came storming back and Ian Havard who had had a quiet afternoon in the Westfields goal made a superb full-length save to keep out a late rally from the visitors.

Westfields now play away at local rivals Lydney Town on Saturday before coming back to allpay.park the following Saturday, 29th January, when they play second in the table Bradford Town who are the current in-form team in the Hellenic League.
