A well-known rat run for motorists heading towards the A40 near Monmouth is to have its speed limit reduced.

Mitchel Troy Common residents have been concerned for some time about vehicles speeding downhill on a narrow road with sharp bends.

The limit on Common Road will drop from 60mph to 30mph next year.

It follows a meeting between Monmouthshire County Council leader Richard John, Monmouth MP David Davies and residents, together with the council’s traffic and road safety manager Graham Kinsella.

Organised by resident Nigel Heath, the meeting on Friday was attended by around a dozen local people.

Council officials have yet to determine where the 30mph zone will begin and end. But the zone, which will be introduced in the new financial year, will help deter speeding motorists in a residential area.

It was also agreed to improve signage warning of sharp bends and the road’s unsuitability for heavy vehicles.

Cllr John, ward member for Mitchel Troy said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to secure this 30mph zone to send a clear message to motorists to be mindful of their speed in this residential area.

“I’m really grateful to local residents for taking the time to meet with me and David and share their concerns about irresponsible driving, but also their constructive ideas about how we can make our roads safer.

“Monmouthshire County Council is accelerating the roll-out of 20mph zones across the county in our most populated towns and villages this year to help keep our communities safe.”

Mr Davies added: “I was pleased to be able to meet residents face-to-face to discuss this.

“I can see exactly what the concerns are. Common Road is narrow and has no pavements, so residents wanting to walk do not feel safe going downhill when cars can be speeding past at up to 60mph.

“I will be working closely with Cllr John to ensure this matter is prioritised and resolved with better signage and a reduced speed limit.”
