Hereford MP Jesse Norman says changes to town centres could make urban spaces more pleasant, safer and greener.
However, he warned that the measures need to be designed with local traders in mind to avoid creating more obstacles to recovery as the coronavirus lockdown eases.
The Government has created a £250m emergency active travel fund to help councils reallocate roadspace for cyclists and pedestrians.
Herefordshire Council is considering reducing speed limits to 20mph in town centres and implementing timed road closures.
They are expected to receive around £200,000 to fund the changes and have so far consulted with local councillors and traders.
“Obviously it makes sense to make changes to streets and paths that protect people against the spread of the virus,” Mr Norman said.
“But these measures need to be designed with the collaboration and support of local businesses and traders, and they need to be temporary and periodically reviewed and assessed.
“If they are done well then the result could be safer, greener and more pleasant urban spaces.
“But if not, the last thing shops and businesses in Hereford city and Ross need, or the local people that use them need, is more obstacles to recovery at this very difficult time.”
