Villagers near Leominster are calling for their lane to be put back as it was before engineers dug it up to install fibre broadband last year.

Contractors working on behalf of Gigaclear installed cables along Whittybrook Lane near Kimbolton in December.

But residents say they failed to properly fill in the hole after placing the cables and haven’t left the lane in a similar state to how they found it.

Denise Burston, who lives along the lane, said contractors did the work at the worst time of year.

“The lane has been like this since they did the work in December.

“One of my neighbours has had to buy a four-wheel drive because the sate of the road meant she couldn’t drive down it with her small car.

“As it’s an unadopted road we have always done small work to it but we can’t fill the big hole in they’ve left.”

A Fastershire spokesperson said the contractors have to make good any area where the dig has taken place.

He said: “Herefordshire Council’s Fastershire Broadband Project has a contract with Gigaclear to build a new fibre broadband network across Herefordshire and Gloucestershire to properties that currently receive less than 30Mbps.

“As a buried network, the rollout is a significant undertaking and unfortunately will cause some disruption, but this new full fibre network will provide ultrafast broadband access to many deeply rural homes and business and will mean Herefordshire has some of the fastest broadband in the country.

“Gigaclear and their contractor, Complete Utilities are required to make good any area where the dig has taken place.

“Although, there can sometimes a delay in this process, for example, if more work is required or when vegetation needs time to regrow.

“The quality of the reinstatement work is closely monitored by Complete Utilities, Gigaclear and also, dedicated provision within Balfour Beatty Living Places on behalf of Fastershire and Herefordshire Council.

“In this case, the network installation was limited to the grass verge and not the bridleway itself.

“Members of the Fastershire team as well as BBLP have visited the lane already and have agreed to a further inspection once the vegetation has had chance to grow. This inspection is due to take place at the end of March and this has been communicated to the resident.”
