Historic Hereford pub rescinds ‘chav’ ban

The new owners of Hereford’s historic Orange Tree pub have revoked its controversial ban on “chav” clothing.

“That’s gone – it’s a clean slate for the pub,” co-owner Harriet Lewis said.

“We are redecorating to give it a new look, it will have bands and DJs, we will be serving street food, and generally aiming to give it a new lease of life.”

The pub gained some brief national fame recently when its former owner banned sportswear, hoodies, tracksuits, bum bags or Stone Island-branded clothing, associated with football hooliganism.

He also denied entry to anyone aged under 21 on Friday and Saturday nights.

The pub has now applied for a permission to sell alcohol up to midnight on weekdays, and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and to also provide “late night refreshment” (hot food and drink) until these times.

It is also seeking permission for live and recorded music between 7pm and 11pm, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

The King Street venue will have an official re-opening with live music next weekend, Ms Lewis said.
