Hereford FC has been given the go-ahead to upgrade its Edgar Street ground’s floodlights to LEDs.

The club has said the switch, for which it is getting external funding, will substantially improve its sustainability and reduce its energy costs.

Herefordshire Council, which owns the ground, said the required works “will be entirely within the site and there will be no impact on passing traffic or pedestrians”.

The club will still have to meet all necessary consents and health and safety legislation, and “obtain consent and co-operation of the telecoms operators who site-share the lighting towers”, the council added.

In a separate move, the club is looking to put in temporary facilities on land and in buildings at the ground’s Blackfriars end which are not part of its lease from the council.

Here it plans to put up fencing and provide what are described as “mobile welfare facilities for the benefit of away visitors for a number of potentially large fixtures during the current season”.

The council said it was granting a licence for this until the end of the season only, “whilst the club works on a permanent solution”.

Hereford FC was asked to comment on the plans.
