‘Dangerous’ parking near a busy junction in Abergavenny could be banned after residents raised concerns around road safety.

A traffic regulation order (TRO) preventing parking at any time near the junction of Lansdown Road with Hereford Road is set to be adopted by Monmouthshire County Council.

The junction is bounded by high masonry walls which restrict forward visibility for drivers turning in and out of Lansdown Road.

Such ‘parking stress’ has been observed by council officers conducting several visits to the area, according to a report written by highways officer Paul Keeble.

“Vehicles parking on this junction on Lansdown Road is a detriment to road safety and is a hazard to normal highway usage,” says the report.

“The presence of parked vehicles also causes vehicles entering and exiting Lansdown Road to have to veer into the opposite side of the carriageway thereby causing a road safety issue.

“The proposed traffic order will enable highway users to use this junction in a safer environment thereby reducing the possibility of an accident on the highway.”

Under the proposals, vehicles would be prohibited from parking on either side of the road within 20 metres of the junction.

The council has been urged by several residents living on the street to adopt the TRO, with Gwent Police, Abergavenny Town Council and Councillor Martyn Groucutt also expressing support.

Councillor Bryan Jones, cabinet member for county operations, is expected to approve the order on February 13.
