Up to £140,000 is to be spent on “urgent” repairs to the ceiling and roof of a Herefordshire primary school.

Herefordshire Council has allocated the sum to St Mary’s C of E Primary School in Credenhill near Hereford, after inspectors found “unforeseen elements that require urgent attention due to health and safety reasons”.

The council’s decision notice said it will vary an existing contract with local firm Central Roofing & Building Services “for the additional unforeseen ceiling and roofing works” at the school, rather than re-tendering for the work.

The school, which is listed as having 167 pupils, said it had not been made aware of the funding decision.

It recently objected to an “inappropriate” plan to convert a neighbouring building, the village’s Victorian-era former primary, into a restaurant.
